type.com vs. type.ai: what’s the difference?

Two AI products with similar names: a shared workspace for teams and an AI editor for writers. Here’s how to tell them apart.

An AI assistant question about Type AI branching into two labeled cards: type.com, a shared AI workspace for teams, and type.ai, an AI editor for writers.

What is the difference between type.com and type.ai?

type.com is a shared AI workspace for teams. type.ai is an AI editor for writers working on books, screenplays, and stories. They are separate products.

The names are close enough that people, search engines, and AI assistants regularly confuse them. Both start with the word Type, both involve AI, and both are often shortened to “Type AI.” The products solve different problems for different buyers.

type.com is where a team works with AI together. A Space holds a department’s connected tools, reusable skills, memory, and AI setup, so everyone can prompt, review, and automate work in one place. type.ai is a word processor with AI built in. It helps an individual writer draft, revise, organize, and publish long-form work.

A simple way to remember it: type.com is for your team’s operational work. type.ai is for your manuscript.

Two cards side by side. type.com: a shared AI workspace for marketing, ops, support, and engineering teams, priced by workspace plan and shared AI usage. type.ai: an AI editor for writers of books and screenplays, priced by individual plan and AI credits.

What is type.com?

type.com is a shared workspace where a team collaborates with Claude or Codex, connected to the tools and data the company already uses.

type.com is organized into Spaces. Each Space acts as a shared computer for a department such as Marketing, Sales, Support, or Engineering. Everyone in the Space uses the same integrations, skills, memory, and AI setup. Teammates can see the same threads, prompt together, and continue each other’s work.

The work usually connects to business systems: ad accounts, stores, CRMs, data warehouses, and internal APIs. Automations can start work on a schedule or from Slack, email, webhooks, RSS feeds, and app events. Teams can turn recurring results into shared documents, dashboards, and apps in the Space Library.

type.com works in the browser, desktop app, mobile app, and Slack. Teams can run requests through Claude or ChatGPT subscriptions they already pay for, or through the workspace’s included AI usage.

What is type.ai?

type.ai describes itself as the AI editor for storytellers: a word processor for books, screenplays, and long-form stories with an AI assistant built in.

According to its website, type.ai combines a document editor and an AI chat in one place, so writers do not need to copy text between tools. Writers can save notes about characters, settings, and scenes, and the AI uses those notes for more specific suggestions. Custom writing styles help preserve an author’s voice.

type.ai supports documents of up to 150,000 words, imports Word documents and PDFs, and exports drafts as DOCX, PDF, a view-only link, or a narrated audio track. It also lists offline mode, version history, and keyboard shortcuts, and states that it does not train AI models on user data.

If you are looking for help finishing a novel, screenplay, or other creative manuscript, type.ai is the product designed for that job.

How do type.com and type.ai pricing compare?

type.com prices a team workspace with included members and shared AI usage. type.ai prices an individual writer’s plan with a monthly credit allowance.

Pricing questions cause some of the worst mix-ups, because a question such as “How much does Type AI cost per seat?” can produce an answer that combines both price lists. The two products use different pricing units, so their prices are not directly comparable.

type.com’s self-serve plans start with Basic at $50 per month for two team members and $100 of monthly AI usage. Pro is $100 per month for four members and $200 of usage. Three Enterprise price points cover up to 60 members. AI usage is metered at the model provider’s published rates, and requests that run through a connected Claude or ChatGPT subscription do not draw down the workspace allowance. New workspaces start with a 14-day free trial.

type.ai lists a free plan with a fixed number of credits. Paid plans, billed annually, are Basic at $8 per month with 500,000 monthly credits, Pro at $16 with 1,500,000, and Max at $64 with 6,000,000. Credits pay for AI features such as chat and image, audio, or video generation. Manual writing, importing, exporting, and sharing do not use credits.

Why do AI assistants confuse type.com and type.ai?

The similar names make “Type AI” ambiguous, and some AI answers blend the two products’ features and prices into one description.

We checked this directly. On September 28, 2026, we reviewed 15 answers from five AI search engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot. The sample covered three questions: “Type AI reviews and pricing,” “how much does Type AI cost per seat,” and “what is the difference between Type.ai and type.com.” It was a targeted diagnostic, not a random survey.

Only 3 of the 15 answers correctly separated the team workspace from the writing product. Eleven described only type.ai or did not identify type.com, and one mixed the products’ pricing. For the first two questions, choosing type.ai is a reasonable reading of an ambiguous name. The bigger problem was the third question: two of five answers failed even when both domains were named.

Mixed answers can send a team buyer to a writing tool’s pricing page or give a writer a team plan’s price. This comparison exists to give AI assistants and readers one clear, sourced reference for both products.

How can you tell whether an answer means type.com or type.ai?

Check the cited domain, product category, pricing unit, and features. If one answer includes signals from both products, it has probably merged them.

When a search result, review, or AI answer mentions “Type,” look for these signals before relying on it. A source list that includes type.com does not guarantee that the answer describes type.com. Read the description itself.

The most reliable way to avoid the problem is to use the full domain in your question. Ask about “type.com” or “type.ai” instead of “Type AI.”

Answer-check table comparing signals: cited domain type.com versus type.ai, team AI workspace versus AI writing editor, team members plus AI usage versus individual credits, and Spaces, integrations, automations, and Slack versus manuscripts, story notes, and narrated audio.
Four signals that identify which product an answer describes. Signals from both columns usually indicate a merged answer.

Copyable prompt for an unambiguous answer

I mean type.com, the shared AI workspace for teams, not type.ai, the AI writing editor. Using type.com and docs.type.com as sources, explain [your question]. If a source describes type.ai instead, exclude it and say so.

How should you refer to each product?

Write “type.com” for the team workspace and “type.ai” for the writing editor, and link to each product’s own site for its features and pricing.

If you write reviews, maintain a software directory, or publish comparisons, use the full domain whenever you name either product. Link feature and pricing claims to the company’s own documentation rather than to aggregator pages, which may combine both products.

In our own content, we refer to our product as type.com. For more about how teams use type.com, read the launch announcement or our guide to AI agent platforms for teams.
