# Reddit AEO Engagement + Citation Tracking

Find up to three fresh Reddit discussions where a helpful reply would fit, then draft comments for your owner to review. Track which threads AI engines cite so research follows citation evidence. Part of the [Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) skillset](https://type.com/library/skills/answer-engine-optimization).

## When it runs

- Recommended schedule: Monday–Friday at 8am in `timezone`, after the daily standup.
- Post one message to `report_channel`. Choose fewer targets on quiet days; never pad.
- A posting calendar applies only if the owner adds a dated row to the log's Posting plan.

## Inputs

| Input | What it is | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `brand_name`, `brand_exclusions` | Exact brand spelling and look-alike names that do not count | Example Co; Example AI |
| `site_url`, `brand_domains` | Your public site and domains | https://example.com |
| `tracker_monitors`, `tracker_engines` | Panel monitors and engines | Buyer problems; ChatGPT search |
| `report_channel`, `owner`, `timezone` | Destination, only permitted DM recipient, local timezone | #aeo; @owner; America/Los_Angeles |
| `subreddits`, `excluded_subreddits` | Owner's research lane and communities assigned elsewhere | Your relevant communities |
| `search_queries`, `buyer_problems` | Category queries and problems your company solves | Team AI subscriptions |
| `voice_guidance` | Approved owner voice and experiences they can truthfully claim | Owner's writing guide |
| `aeo_master_doc`, `reddit_log` | Shared evidence and suggested/commented-thread log | The AEO master doc; the Reddit AEO log |

## Before you start

Connect Promptwatch in type.com as a Custom API connection using your Promptwatch project API key. Another tracker works if it exposes equivalent data: `citations/grouped` for URLs, counts and engines, and `responses` for question-level answers and citations. Connect Slack or an equivalent report destination and read-only Reddit research tools. An approved Apify Reddit research connection is a fallback; never scrape reddit.com directly.

Read the owner's voice guidance before drafting. Find the AEO master doc and Reddit log in the workspace. On first run, create missing docs and tell the owner where they are. Initialize the log with Posting plan (date | subreddit | post | status), Commented threads (date | permalink | subreddit | brand named? | cited by engines? | last checked), Cited Reddit threads (weekly), and Run log. Put the drafting guardrails in its description.

## Steps

### 1. Find where citations actually come from

Read every page of `citations/grouped` for the last 7 days, page size 100; retain URLs whose domain is reddit.com. Do not sample. For every cited Reddit URL record subreddit, title, count, engines and the monitor or question that cited it. Match URLs against the last 7 days of `responses`, paginating all answers.

Summarize the subreddits cited for your panel, the top 5 cited threads, and whether any thread in Commented threads is now cited. Weight fresh targets toward those subreddits and thread types, while respecting `excluded_subreddits`.

### 2. Research fresh comment targets

Use available Reddit research tools first. If unavailable, use an approved read-only Apify Reddit search actor with query, maxResults 25, contentType posts, sort new, timeFilter day and the configured subreddit list. Starting a research scraper job is retrieval only; never use it to write to Reddit. If both sources fail, give one line explaining that fresh-target research was skipped, and continue with citation evidence.

Search the subreddits engines cite, followed by `subreddits`; exclude the owner's out-of-lane communities. Run 2–3 query passes and deduplicate by permalink. Add one query derived from the panel question that most recently lost a citation in the master doc's Alert log.

Use only threads from the last 24 hours. Skip crypto, NSFW, memes, vendor self-promotion, news megathreads, and anything where a commercial-adjacent reply violates community rules. In “I will not promote” threads, never draft a product mention.

Rank in this order: (1) the original poster explicitly asks for tool recommendations; (2) they describe a problem in `buyer_problems`; (3) a live category discussion in a subreddit engines cite. Pick the best 3, fewer on a quiet day, and say when there are fewer. For each save subreddit, title, permalink, score, comments and age.

Draft a ready-to-review comment in `voice_guidance`. Help first. At most 1 in 10 comments may name `brand_name`, only when the original poster explicitly asks for tools, with a truthful affiliation disclosure such as “I work on <brand_name>”. Never claim experiences the owner has not had. Keep each draft under approximately 100 words. The owner reviews and posts manually.

If today's Posting plan has a dated row, put its suggested post first. Never infer a recurring posting calendar.

### 3. Update only the log sections this skill owns

Append today's suggested threads to Run log as one line. Refresh Cited Reddit threads (weekly) with the full citation list. For each Commented threads row, update only cited by engines? and last checked using the citation evidence. The owner marks a thread commented by adding a row; a suggestion is never evidence that it was posted. Remind the owner on Mondays.

### 4. Post the drafts and evidence

Send one post to `report_channel` and confirm delivery. Do not post anything to Reddit.

## What it posts

Maximum 12 lines of text plus up to 3 quote blocks:

```text
Do next (<owner>)
1. <owner>: review and paste in r/<sub> · "<title>" · <permalink> · <score>/<comments>/<age>
> <drafted comment 1>
2. <owner>: review and paste in r/<sub> · "<title>" · <permalink> · <score>/<comments>/<age>
> <drafted comment 2>
3. <owner>: review and paste in r/<sub> · "<title>" · <permalink> · <score>/<comments>/<age>
> <drafted comment 3>
Reddit AEO — <Weekday, Mon D> · <n> targets · engines cited Reddit <n>× this week, mostly r/<sub>
Why
• <top cited thread> · <count> cites (<engines>)
• <commented threads now cited, or 0>
```

Include today's planned post only if a dated row exists. On Mondays add “Commented on something? Add it to the log” and link the log once as “Details → <log link>”; omit the detail link on other days. Fit any posting-plan draft within the same three-quote-block cap.

## Output rules

- Lead with what the owner should paste and where. Each target is one line plus its quote block.
- “Do next” comes before evidence; each action names an owner, verb, exact thread and link.
- Numbers, not adjectives. No preamble, method, or source-availability notes unless fresh-target research was skipped, then one line.
- Keep angle explanations, guardrails and subreddit lists in the log, not the report.
- Hard cap: 12 lines of text plus up to 3 quote blocks. One idea per line.
- Write `brand_name` exactly; exclude `brand_exclusions` when counting mentions.

## Safety

- Read-only on every third party. Never submit forms, send email or outreach, sign up, comment, vote, DM or post on Reddit, X, LinkedIn or other social/community sites. Drafts are for human review.
- Never change tracker prompts, monitors, personas, models or schedules.
- Only write the report-channel post and scoped edits to the named log sections. This skill sends no DMs; any added owner notification must go only to `owner`.
- Never @-mention anyone in a channel. Never include credentials, tokens or passwords in posts, docs or DMs.

## Example configuration

How type.com configures this skill (example):

- Brand: type.com; do not count the look-alike type.ai. Channel #b-aeo, owner Sam, weekdays at 8am America/Los_Angeles.
- Owner lane: aiToolForBusiness, AIforOPS, smallbusiness, startups, DigitalMarketing, marketing, SEO, bigseo, shopify, ecommerce, Entrepreneur.
- A teammate's lane, excluded from Sam's targets: AI_Agents, SaaS, ArtificialInteligence, automation.
- Queries: AI (agent OR assistant OR automation) (recommend OR “best tool” OR “looking for” OR “anyone using”); (ChatGPT OR Claude OR AI) (team OR subscriptions OR “per seat” OR stack OR Slack); (“AEO” OR “answer engine” OR “AI overviews” OR “ChatGPT recommends”) brand, in SEO communities only.
- Buyer problems: siloed AI, per-seat cost sprawl, teams unable to share context, agents in Slack. Drafts use Sam's approved voice.
- The October 2026 dry run found Reddit citations in communities outside Sam's lane. Report the evidence; let the owner decide whether to expand their lane.
